Chapter Twelve

Even the longest day draws to its close, and Julie let herself into the house that evening with a feeling of thankfulness that it was over, even though she had yet to face the night.

Biddy was out on one of her mysterious errands, Dickie immured as usual in the other room with his books, and Mrs. Cave was in the kitchen with her pile of mending.

‘Tired, darling?’ she asked, pushing the socks aside to take Julie’s favourite savoury from the oven.

‘A little. It’s been an interesting day, though,’ and as she made a pretence at eating, knowing that the savoury had taken a long time to prepare, she outlined her day, described her visit to Mrs. Milroy’s beautiful house, but could not bring herself to mention Mrs. Dale or the coincidental discovery of her acquaintance with Jeremy.

Just as she had finished and was carrying the dishes out to the scullery preparatory to helping with the mending, the bell rang, two long rings and a short one, and she stood still, her face working queerly. Then she set down the dishes with trembling hands and went towards the door.

‘That’s Jerry. I can’t see him, Mum,’ she said, and fled up the stairs and into her room.

Mrs. Cave, her mouth set in a grim line quite foreign to it, went to the door to admit the unwelcome visitor.

To her amazement, Jeremy showed no sign of embarrassment, but came jauntily into the hall, hung his hat on its accustomed peg and gave Mrs. Cave a boisterous kiss.

‘Hullo, darling,’ he said. ‘If my affections were not otherwise engaged, I’d be falling head over ears in love with you’ – and he went into the kitchen, singing:

‘Lovely lady,

I’m falling madly in love with you!’
